Frequently Asked Questions

What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle Japanese energy healing practice. The word itself means "universal life energy," the same kind of energy that flows through every living being. Think of it like the WiFi signal that's already running through a room. It doesn't need to be created. It just needs a clear channel to flow through. As a Reiki practitioner, I'm trained to be that clear channel, offering that energy to your animal companion so their own body can use it to relax, rebalance, and support its natural healing process.
Reiki doesn't diagnose or replace veterinary care. It works alongside it, the same way rest, good nutrition, and a calm environment support a body's ability to heal.
How does Distance Reiki work?
Distance Reiki works on the understanding that energy isn't limited by physical space. You've likely felt this yourself. Ever thought about a friend right before they called you? That's a small, everyday example of energetic connection that isn't bound by distance.
Distance sessions are the heart of Animal Reiki Flow. Most sessions take place over Zoom, so I can see your companion and hold that connection in real time. If Zoom isn't an option, an iPhone FaceTime call works just as well, and if neither is available, simply a name and a recent photo is enough for the energy to reach them. Your companion doesn't need to do anything or be aware it's happening. Many animals will get sleepy, sigh, stretch, or settle into a deep rest right around session time, even from miles away.
One of the biggest gifts of distance work is that it removes a stress most caretakers don't even think about: the car ride, the unfamiliar building, the waiting room. Your companion gets to receive their session curled up in their own bed or favorite spot, with nothing unfamiliar added to their day.
For situations where being on location genuinely serves the animal better, such as a farm visit or a rodeo event here in Las Vegas, I do travel locally to work in person. But distance Reiki, done right from home, is how the majority of my work happens.
What is a Chakra Balance?
Chakras are energy centers that run through the body, each one connected to a different aspect of physical, emotional, and instinctual wellbeing. Animals share the same seven main chakras we do, but they also have two chakras unique to them.
The Brachial chakra sits at the base of the neck between the shoulder blades, right where you'd naturally rest a hand on a dog, cat, or horse. It's considered the "master chakra" for animals, since it's the main gateway they use to connect with us, with other animals, and with their surroundings. The Sensing chakras are found at the whiskers, nose, ears, and eyes, and relate to the sharp instincts and heightened senses animals rely on to read the world around them, often far more acutely than we do.
Picture all of these centers like traffic circles along a street. When they're all flowing smoothly, everything moves the way it should. When one gets congested, it can create a backup that affects the whole system. A Chakra Balance is a session focused on checking each of these energy centers, including the brachial and sensing chakras, and clearing out anything that feels stuck or heavy, restoring smooth, even flow from head to tail. It's especially supportive for animals working through fear, past trauma, aggression, or a big life change like a move, a new home, or the loss of a companion (animal or human).
What does Reiki do for an animal companion who is ready to cross the rainbow bridge?
This is some of the most meaningful work I do.
When an animal is nearing the end of life, Reiki is not used to stop, delay, or hasten the natural process of passing. What it can offer is comfort, calm, and a supportive space as the animal moves through this transition in their own way.
Animals nearing the end of life may be dealing with physical discomfort, anxiety, restlessness, or simply a sense that their body feels different. Reiki offers a calm, steady presence that may help them relax, settle, and feel supported without asking anything of them.
This can be especially meaningful when a family is facing euthanasia. Reiki can be offered before or around an assisted passing to help create a peaceful atmosphere for both the animal and the people who love them. It does not interfere with veterinary care or the euthanasia process.
Animals are often very aware of their caretakers and responsive to our emotions, voices, body language, and energy. Even near the end of life, some may still seem focused on comforting or watching over us.
That does not mean you need to hide your grief or remain perfectly calm.
Reiki can support the caretaker, too, creating a softer, steadier space so you can simply be present together. Sometimes that shared, gentle space is exactly what is needed.
The animal still has choice throughout the session. They may rest, move around, stay close, spend time alone, receive Reiki from a distance, or simply sleep.
No pressure to stay.
No pressure to go.
Just a peaceful space where the animal is free to do what they need to do.
Whether an animal passes naturally or through euthanasia, Reiki can accompany them with the same intention: comfort, calm, respect, and love.
If my animal companion seems healthy, why would they need Reiki or Chakra Balancing?
Health isn't only physical. Animals absorb far more than we realize, our stress, a chaotic household, a move, a new baby or pet in the home, loud noises, past trauma from before you even knew them. None of that always shows up as an obvious symptom.
Think of Reiki as similar to how we might get a massage or meditate even when nothing is technically "wrong." It's preventative and restorative. Regular sessions can help maintain emotional balance, deepen the sense of safety in their environment, and support the immune system, so your companion isn't just free of illness, but truly thriving.
Is Reiki or Chakra Balancing religious?
No. Reiki is a spiritual practice in the sense that it works with universal life energy, but it isn't tied to any specific religion and doesn't require any particular belief system to work. It's practiced by people of all faiths and of no faith at all, in the same way that yoga or meditation are personal wellness practices rather than religious ones. You don't need to believe in anything for your animal companion to receive the benefits. Their body responds to the energy regardless.
Can I do more than one animal at a time?
Yes. Whether it's a household with multiple companions or an entire string of rodeo horses before a big event, group sessions allow me to offer that same calming, grounding energy to several animals at once, all through distance work. It's a wonderful option for barns, rescues, multi-pet homes, or teams heading into a competition, helping create a shared sense of calm across the whole group without adding a single extra animal to a trailer or waiting area.
What do you mean that Reiki and Chakra Balancing are non-touch and non-invasive?
Non-touch simply means I don’t need to physically touch or handle your animal companion for Reiki to be offered. Whether the session is in person or at a distance, physical contact is never required.
Non-invasive means there are no needles, no manipulation, no products applied, and no procedures of any kind. This makes Reiki an especially gentle option for animals who are fearful, in pain, recovering from surgery, elderly, feral, or simply not comfortable being handled. There's nothing to submit to. They can simply receive as much or as little as feels right to them, on their own terms.
What can I expect during a session?
Every session is calm and unhurried. Since most sessions are distance work, we'll typically connect over Zoom (or FaceTime, or simply using your companion's name and photo) at the scheduled time, and I'll hold space for the energy to flow from wherever I am.
Your animal companion leads the pace. Some will come right over to the screen and lean in. Others will wander off and return later, or simply rest nearby. There's no right way for them to participate. Common signs the energy is being received include deep sighs, yawning, softened eyes, twitching ears, a full-body stretch, or falling into a deep, relaxed sleep.
What can I expect after a session?
Most animals feel noticeably more relaxed, and many sleep more deeply for the rest of that day. Some caretakers notice a shift in behavior right away, like a more settled temperament or improved appetite. Others see changes unfold gradually over the following days, since the body continues integrating the energy after the session ends.
Occasionally, an animal may seem a little more tired, clingy, or even mildly "off" for a day as they release built-up tension. This is a normal and temporary part of the process, similar to feeling sleepy after a deep massage. Plenty of fresh water and a quiet space to rest afterward is the best support you can offer. Reiki can never harm the animal.
A few more questions I get often:
Does my animal companion need to be present or paying attention during a session?
No. This is especially true for distance and Rodeo Reiki sessions. Energy isn't dependent on focus or awareness. Your companion can be sleeping, eating, out at pasture, or even loaded in a trailer on the way to an event. The energy reaches them regardless.
Will Reiki work on a fearful, reactive, or aggressive animal?
Often, yes, and these are some of the animals who benefit the most. Because there's no handling involved, Reiki removes the pressure that can trigger a fear or aggression response in the first place. Many caretakers see real softening over time in animals who have been difficult to reach through other methods.
How many sessions will my animal companion need?
It depends on what you're addressing. A single session can offer real relief for a specific moment, like pre-event nerves or the day of a vet visit. Ongoing issues like chronic anxiety, past trauma, or general wellbeing tend to respond best to a series of sessions, similar to how one workout won't build lasting strength, but a consistent practice will.
What is Rodeo Reiki?
Rodeo Reiki by Animal Reiki Flow is my mission to bring Reiki into the rodeo world, a space where the animals give so much and rarely have energy work offered to them. Rodeo and performance stock carry a lot of physical and nervous system stress from travel, arenas, crowds, and competition. Rodeo Reiki offers these horses and livestock that same calming, grounding energy, primarily through distance sessions, with local, in-person support available for events right here in Las Vegas.
Does Reiki work on horses, livestock, and rodeo stock the same way it works on dogs and cats?
Yes. Energy doesn't discriminate by species, and performance animals respond beautifully to this calming, grounding work, whether it's offered from across the arena or across the country.
Is there an age limit? Can very young or very senior animals receive Reiki?
Not at all. Reiki is gentle enough for animals at every life stage, from newborns to elderly companions in their final chapter. It's often especially soothing for very young or very old animals whose systems are more sensitive.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for a session?
For a distance session, simply have Zoom ready at the scheduled time, or let me know if FaceTime or a name and photo work better for you. For an in-person visit, a calm, quiet space where your companion feels safe is all that's needed. You don't need to explain anything to your companion or prepare them in any way.
Can Reiki harm or hurt my animal?
No. In the practice of Reiki, we hold as a core belief that Reiki can never cause harm. It's universal life energy responding to what's needed, so it can't be overdone, misapplied, or forced somewhere it doesn't belong. An animal will simply take in only what they're ready to receive in that moment, nothing more. This is part of what makes it such a safe option for animals who are fragile, elderly, healing, or easily overwhelmed.
Can Reiki replace veterinary or professional care?
No, and I want to be clear about that. Reiki is a wonderful complement to veterinary medicine, training, and behavioral work, but it isn't a substitute for diagnosis or treatment from a licensed veterinarian. Please always continue working with your vet for any medical concerns.
Am I insured?
Yes. Animal Reiki Flow LLC with Kim Wolff carries liability insurance for Animal Reiki Flow and Rodeo Reiki, so you can feel confident having me work with your animal, whether that's a distance session from home or an in-person visit at a farm or rodeo event. A certificate of insurance is available upon request.
